Belfast Man Charged with Criminal Threatening While Inviting Congressman Michaud to an Old Fashioned Town Hall Meeting
On August 24, 2009, political activist Malcolm Bryant attended Congressman Michael Michaud’s office to invite the Congressman to an old fashioned Town Hall Meeting scheduled for August 25, 2009 in Brewer, Maine. Said Town Hall Meeting was to be attended by several hundred Maine citizens in which they would be asking Congressman Michaud questions about his liberal political positions, misspending of money and the status of politics in the United States of America in 2009 following the substantial destruction of our nation’s economy and international safety, of which Mr. Michaud was directly involved. At no time did Mr. Bryant threaten Mr. Michaud or anyone affiliated with him. Mr. Bryant exercised his right to attend the office of his congressman to protest improper and negative votes and problems with Mr. Michaud’s representation of him in the United States Congress, as well as his right to attend his congressman’s office, all of which is constitutionally protected. A young and inexperienced office worker in Mr. Michaud’s office overreacted to the political debate that was involved between Mr. Bryant and the congressman’s office that day and has resulted in a false charge against Mr. Bryant. Witnesses to the alleged event from which the criminal charges stem, all indicated that there was no threat made to the alleged victim. Attorney N. Laurence Willey, Jr. of Bangor represents Mr. Bryant. The case is pending in Penobscot Superior Court. Mr. Willey said that Mr. Bryant was exercising his constitutional right to free speech and assembly, no one was threatened and the fact that Mr. Michaud’s office was unwilling to entertain an invitation to the “forum” and his failure to attend, is more an indictment of Congressman Michaud and his staff.
