Traffic Safety Facts
1. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for every age from 6 through 28 years old.
2. In fatal crashes, 73% of passenger car occupants who were totally ejected were killed. Safety belts are very effective in preventing total ejections: only 1% of the occupants reported to be using restraints were totally ejected, compared with 20% of the unrestrained occupants.
3. As of 1994, an estimated 308 children under age 5 were saved as a result of child restraint use.
4. About 2 in every 5 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives.
5. Nearly 50% of fatal crashes involve alcohol.
6. Having your headlights on can reduce accidents by as much as 20%.
7. Driving fatigue can sneak up on you. Never drive more than 100 miles at a time. Take regular breaks.
8. Preparing an emergency kit for your vehicle, including gloves, flashlight, batteries, flares, shovel, blanket, and first aid supplies can save a life.
